Diaries / The Headmistress’s Term Journal

Fiction. The diaries, legends, reports and some of the staff are invented. The academies are real.

Headmistress Selene explains why she and Corvus the owl keep journals, what is in them, and the margin-scribbling sorcerer she refuses to take seriously.

Why We Keep Journals

Thursday. It has been decided, mostly by me, that these journals will be kept where parents and apprentices can read them. Corvus agreed, after some time spent staring at a wall, which I took as a yes.

So: welcome. This is the term journal of the Headmistress of Magic School, written in the staffroom in Manly with sand in the inkwell. Corvus’s notes, from the university in Melbourne, sit beside mine. Read us both, or one of us, or skip to the bits about cake.

You will not find the answers to the final test here. You will find everything around it: the classes, the birthdays, the rules on the door, the weather, the seagulls.

A word of caution. Over at the castle, outside the Headmaster’s sanctum, one of the Sorcerers of the Dark Side has started scribbling in the margins of his spellbook and calling it a diary. Read it if you must. I do, for the comedy. Do not lend him a pen.

— Selene, Headmistress
