The head of the academy in Magic School, who summons her apprentices for one last examination when the Blood Eclipse turns the sky the colour of rust and the Founders’ Spell begins to fray.

She likes punctual apprentices, strong tea and a corridor with no sand in it. She keeps a term journal, writes letters to an owl in Melbourne and reads a certain sorcerer’s margin notes purely to disapprove of them.

The professor’s watchful owl, and the only guide a first-year class has when the professor vanishes on their very first day and the lecture hall seals itself shut.

Corvus is formal, patient and faintly disappointed in everybody. He keeps night notes in a careful hand, and writes back to Headmistress Selene, though he will not admit that he enjoys it.

The professor who disappears in the middle of the very first lesson at Magic University, bound by powerful enchantments while his class is sealed in the lecture hall behind him.

Somewhere on campus is an artefact strong enough to break the magic that holds him. His owl is quietly certain the class will find it. The professor, wherever he is, is presumably still marking.

The head of the castle in The Wizard’s Chamber, who keeps the formula for an immortality elixir in his private sanctum, and who chooses a handful of students to slip in and destroy it before the Sorcerers of the Dark Side break through.

Society members consider the castle the oldest door into this world: The Wizard’s Chamber came first, and Escape This calls Magic School its sequel.

The academy’s caretaker, who follows the builders about with a broom, keeps the stone corridor tidy and wins a long, quiet war against the sand from Manly beach.

Hollis also keeps the lost property book, which the Society has published here for the first time. It is mostly sandals.

A Sorcerer of the Dark Side who has spent years outside the walls of the castle in The Wizard’s Chamber, never once getting into the Headmaster’s sanctum, and writing down every class of students that beats him to the formula.

He writes in the margins of his spellbook, mocks Headmistress Selene, is mocked back, and has never yet won. The Society is quietly fond of him.

Crumpet

Every sorcerer needs a familiar. Wendell has Crumpet, a small newt who lives in his pocket, comes to every siege and has never shown the slightest interest in immortality.

Society members believe Crumpet is the real brains of the operation and simply chooses not to help.

Bramble

In Society lore, the academy’s Mistress of Herbs, who hangs her drying herbs from a chandelier in the old rooms and labels every bunch in handwriting nobody else can read.

Bramble and Hollis have argued about the leaves on the floor since the day the academy opened. Hollis sweeps. Bramble says they are drying.

Selene, Corvus, the professor, the Headmaster and the Sorcerers of the Dark Side come from the rooms; Hollis, Wendell and Crumpet from the diaries. Bramble was invented by the Society.
